Empower Her. Support Her Physical, Financial, and Emotional Well-Being
In addition to ULT’s Monthly Laundry Events, Direct Service Program, and School Laundry Launch program, we serve as a connection-hub to support Women’s Physical, Emotional, and Financial Well-Being. Below is a list of links connected to vital Triangle-based partner associations that provide critical areas of need for women.
Physical Wellness: Amerihealth Caritas NC and Blue Cross Blue-Shield
Emotional Wellness: “The Women’s Center” serves Triangle Area women in several areas, including emotional-wellness and mental health support.
Financial Wellness: “StepUp Durham” provides rigorous workforce development and financial literacy courses for women.
Mothers and Single Mothers: The Weight they Carry
For mothers — and especially single mothers who are the sole financial lifeline for their entire household — laundry security can feel like an impossible dream buried beneath rent, groceries, utility bills, and student loan payments. In North Carolina alone, over half of working-class households below the financial stability threshold are led by single mothers, and a staggering 78% of those homes experience laundry insecurity — despite the fact that 68% of these mothers work full-time jobs.
Think about what that means: a woman waking up at 5 a.m., working eight or more hours, coming home to children who need dinner, homework help, and bedtime stories — and still carrying the silent stress of not knowing if her kids will have clean uniforms for school tomorrow.
Children in these homes miss school at higher rates, develop more respiratory infections, and carry a quiet embarrassment that follows them into the classroom.
When Uplift provides laundry security to a mother, we aren’t just washing clothes — we are restoring her peace of mind, protecting her children’s health and attendance, and giving her back hours of worry that she can now invest in her family’s future. A mother who is not drowning in the logistics of survival has the energy to dream — and to help her children do the same.
